We often take for granted all of the locks, keys, and locking mechanisms in our lives; they are so prevalent in our everyday actions that it’s hard to compartmentalize just how important they are in our lives. Present in our early childhood development, using a lock and key is a skill similar to washing your hands or using a TV; everyone just knows how to do it! We become accustomed to the minutiae in our lives working and being tools that should always be there when we need it; so, when something breaks down or malfunctions, we are quite short with our patience as the inconvenience often halts our lives.

A lock-out, a lost key, a broken lock, a jammed door, a non-working electronic key, a broken off key… the list is long of the problems one can encounter!

Let’s take a look at some of the most common problems you might encounter and the best way to solve them!

Broken Key:

You insert the key into the lock, you go to turn, and SNAP! You are holding the top of your key, and the cut edge is staring at you from inside the locking mechanism. One of the most frustrating lock and key problems to encounter, these mishaps often occur because of speed… you are rushing and mis-handling or overtly forcing the mechanism to work quickly. Slow down and allow the key and lock to work properly! Once this incident has occurred, you will need to call a locksmith to help remove any remaining bits of the key and to assemble the locking mechanism… and probably cut you a new key!

Slow or Seized Locks:

When dirt or grime accumulate within the locking mechanism, it can operate slowly or feel like it’s sticking or rubbing. You will be able to feel this as you use the key or turn the deadbolt. Never use oil or grease to remedy this problem; those substances will only further clog the lock and cause further damage. If you want to try the DIY fix first, use a graphite or silicone spray to lubricate the lock. Unfamiliar with these products or procedures? Enlisting the help of a locksmith is the way to go! If you are able to insert the key but not turn the key, you have a ‘seized lock’ and using a locksmith in that situation is certainly the best option.

Bolt and Door Latch:

You close the door and go to turn the deadbolt and it won’t complete the rotation? Sometimes you have to use the weight of your body to shoulder the door closed? Often a door won’t latch because it is misaligned with the strike plate on the door jam. More seriously, if the bolt or lock isn’t working at all, it is time to call in the pros! A locksmith will be able to quickly assess the situation and determine if it is repairable or if it’s time to replace the entire mechanism.
